Shopify is one of the largest and most popular e-commerce platforms for online stores and retail businesses.
It is a subscription-based software that lets you set up an online store and sell their products.
Shopify is an all-in-one digital transformation solution for business owners to be able to create, design, host, brand, and promote your online store as well as operate their product inventory, fulfill orders and even manage shipping.
Out of the box, Shopify is your one-stop-shop to run your business: you get a storefront, a payment processor, a shipping partner, a back office, and marketing headquarters, all in one. These are the core functions of running a business.
Shopify was started in Ottawa, Canada, back in 2004. Shopify works best for retail sellers and small businesses but it is also being used by large corporations as well. Today Shopify users include celebrity entrepreneurs like Eminem, Kylie Jenner, and Kanye West as well as Fortune 500s like Pepsi, GE, Unilever, and Nestle.
The platform is designed for businesses selling variable products (e.g. items with lots of different colors, sizes etc.) as well as for consumers who buy lots of things at a time. It doesn’t work that well with service-based and SaaS platforms.
The biggest power of Shopify is in connecting online and offline sides of businesses (e.g. selling online while shipping offline, as well as coordinating online and offline inventory effectively).
Shopify is a cross-channel commerce solution that allows merchants to sell from multiple channels including a website, a mobile app, social media accounts, online marketplaces and brick-and-mortar locations.
Shopify platform offers multiple features, including an easy site builder, a content management platform, cloud-based hosting, tax and income management solutions, SEO and marketing tools, and so much more.
No wonder Shopify is becoming widely popular all around the world. According to Oberlo, Shopify owns 29% of ecommerce platform market share in the United States which makes it the most popular ecommerce solution, closely followed only by WooCommerce that currently holds 23% of the market.
There are more than 6000 Shopify Apps and more than 100 customizable themes giving business owners lots of flexibility as to what their online store should look like and how they want to manage their sales.
According to Shopify itself, 1.75 million merchants sell on Shopify from 175 countries. Overall, Shopify has been showing exponential growth over the years. According to the platform,
Shopify was a powerful digital transformation during the pandemic years. The platform introduced several important initiatives in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic to help business owners quickly and easily start selling online.
Those initiatives included extending their trial to three months and adding the buy-online-curbside pickup and local delivery options.
As a result, the platform grew its revenue by 86% in 2020 and the number of global consumers buying from Shopify merchants grew 52% from 2019.
